Phish Continue Run at MSG

Last night, Phish’s New Year’s Eve run at New York’s Madison Square Garden continued. The evening opened with “Backwards Down the Number Line,” a likely nod to Jon Fishman’s daughter Ella, who was celebrating her birthday.

From there, the Vermont Quartet moved into the Hoist classic “Wolfman’s Brother,” the funky Halloween 2018 favorite “Turtle in the Cloud,” the the slinky “Undermind” and a rocking “Kill Devil Falls.” The band then launched into their first argue of the night, moving from a big “Fuego” that slid into the gentle Billy Breathes tune “Train Song.” Then, they continued the exploratory part of the first set, dropping into an “It’s Ice” that moved into only the third ever “Life Saving Gun.” The well-received song originated on Page McConnell and Trey Anastasio’s 2023 album January and last night’s version stretched past the 10-minute mark.

Phish’s second set was once again a seamless segment of music, opening with “The Well,” a new tune from the Trey Anastasio Trio’s May shows and then segueing into the classic “Tweezer.” That number clocked in at 13-minutes but still stretched into some interesting improv, before segueing into an interesting “Piper,” TV on the Radio’s “ Golden Age,” “ Also Sprach Zarathustra,” Sigma Oasis” and an extended, rocking “ David Bowie.”
