Yesterday, January 19, Umphrey’s McGee launched its three-night string of shows at Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Brooklyn Steel. The series debut featured two of the group’s renowned genre-bending covers, with surprise renditions of LCD Soundsystem’s “Tribulations” and Tenacious D’s “Kielbasa” bookending the second set. The band’s LCD Soundsystem homage arrives as a tribute to the artist’s legacy at Brooklyn Steel, having performed at the venue more than any other act, while the Tenacious D rendition aligns with the comedy duo’s return to the spotlight after a 20-year hiatus.
Umphrey’s performance began with 2021’s “There’s No Crying In Mexico,” followed by a combination of live staple “40’s Theme” and “Half Delayed.” Then came “1348″ and a medley of “Hourglass,” “Get In The Van,” “Sociable Jimmy” and “Seasons,” with a return to “1348” concluding the first set. The band kicked off its second set with its fifth live performance of LCD Soundsystem’s “Tribulations,” before moving into “Nothing Too Fancy,” the final track from its first album Local Band Does O.K. Next, the band played “Cemetery Walk,” continuing into a mix of “Cemetery Walk II,” “Rocker Part II” and “Ringo.” For the penultimate song in their second set, Umphrey’s revived “Kielbasa,” the first track off Tenacious D’s self-titled debut album, for their seventh rendition since 2001. Finally, the group closed with a second treatment of “Ringo,” then returning to the stage for an encore of “The Weight Around” and another “Nothing Too Fancy.”
Umphrey’s McGee will perform again tonight and tomorrow, 1/20-21, at Brooklyn Steel, before Brendan Bayliss moves on to Chicago’s Chop Shop for a performance with Snakes and Stars on 1/26. For information on further tour dates, visit umphreys.com/tour/.
