Yesterday, Jan. 24, The Recording Academy announced via Instagram that Billy Joel will perform at the 66th Grammy Awards on Feb. 4. This news follows the artist’s surprising announcement earlier this week that he will return to the spotlight with his first new material in over a decade, a single titled “Turn the Lights Back On” to be released on Feb. 1, just days before the event.

Joel’s performance at this year’s ceremony will be among the ranks of previously announced artists Billie Eilish, Burna Boy, Dua Lipa, Luke Combs, Olivia Rodrigo and Travis Scott. While Joel is not nominated during this award cycle, he has won six Grammy awards over the course of his career and been nominated 23 times; Joel’s wins were for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1978, Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance in 1979, Best Rock Vocal Performance in 1980 and the special Legend Award in 1991, of which Joel is one of only 15 recipients.

After 17 years without a new studio release, Joel shocked his fans with the long-awaited announcement of his single, “Turn the Lights Back On,” on Monday, Jan. 22. The song was initially teased in the artist’s first post on TikTok last month, in which he let fans know, “we got a little something we’re working on.” This record, co-written with and produced by Freddy Wexler, is Joel’s latest since 2007’s dual singles “All My Life” and “Christmas in Fallujah,” which followed 1993’s River of Dreams.

The 66th Grammy awards are scheduled for Feb. 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Read on for the Recording Academy’s official announcement.
