Metro Boomin says he was “really hurt and disappointed” by fallout with Drake

Metro Boomin has opened up on his fallout with Drake, which he said “disappointed” him – find out more below.

Earlier this year, Metro Boomin and Future enlisted Kendrick Lamar on their song ‘Like That’, which reignited the years-long feud between Drake and Lamar that finally came to an explosive end in May.

Besides Lamar hitting out at Drake and J. Cole on the song, it also stemmed from bad blood between producer Metro Boomin and Drake. Speaking to GQ (via magazine blurbs shared by Elliott Wilson on X), Boomin explained that his beef with Drake was over a “personal” matter: “Me and [Drake], we had a personal issue, and for the record, not over no girl or nothing silly like that. It was a personal issue that really hurt me and disappointed me.”

While Boomin never divulged what that “personal issue” was, he suggested that their fallout was “regular shit” that was elevated in front of an audience. He also iterated that his two albums with Future ‘We Don’t Trust You’ and ‘We Still Don’t Trust You’ weren’t made purely as jabs at Drake.

Boomin said: “People really think we sat for two years, making two albums [to be] like, Yo, fuck this dude. What kind of shit is that? You really think we are going to spend that much time, effort, resources on just trying to get at somebody on an album? Blowing budgets on two albums—going over budget? That’s some serious hate. Neither one of us rock like that.”

‘Like That’ was the catalyst that sparked Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s vicious rap beef over several weeks earlier this year. The feud seemingly came to an end in May when Kendrick dropped ‘Not Like Us’ and Drake issued ‘The Heart part 6’.

However, Drake has recently filed two legal actions against Universal Music Group in relation to ‘Not Like Us’. The first dispute, filed in New York, alleges that UMG “artificially inflated” streaming numbers for ‘Not Like Us’ and involved undisclosed “pay-to-play” schemes.

The second dispute – filed in Texas – alleges defamation, claiming that UMG “knowingly” approved of ‘Not Like Us’ being released despite Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics alleging that Drake is a “pedophile”.

Kendrick Lamar’s team have yet to respond to NME‘s attempts to reach out for comment. Meanwhile UMG said regarding both filings: “The suggestion that UMG would do anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue. We employ the highest ethical practices in our marketing and promotional campaigns. No amount of contrived and absurd legal arguments in this pre-action submission can mask the fact that fans choose the music they want to hear.”

In related news, it was announced earlier this month that Metro Boomin is being sued for sexual battery. The lawsuit comes from a woman claiming that the rapper, real name Leland Tyler Wayne, raped her in 2016. She is alleging that the assault led to an unwanted and subsequently terminated pregnancy.

Metro Boomin has denied all allegations.
