Listen to UPSAHL’s exclusive playlist to accompany The Cover
UPSAHL has shared an exclusive playlist to accompany her appearance on NME’s The Cover this week (December 9).
The alt-pop star is the latest to grace The Cover, a renewal of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read the profile of UPSAHL here, written by Hannah Mylrea and featuring photography by Ashley Osborn.
To accompany The Cover, UPSAHL has curated an exclusive playlist for NME titled ‘Straight out of PHX’, named after her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. The collection features 15 songs that highlight the singer’s wide-ranging music influences, from rock bands such as Amyl and The Sniffers and Weezer, classic hits by The Ting Tings and Depeche Mode to songs from contemporaries like COBRAH and Little Simz. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.
The Cover casts a spotlight on the “many ups and downs” UPSAHL has faced over her seven year career, a journey that has brought her to a place where she is now “the version of myself that I’ve wanted to become for a really long time”. This newfound confidence is something that she hasn’t always had during her time in the industry, telling NME that “you have to remind yourself, especially as a woman in the industry, that you’re the reason you’re where you’re at”.
The alt-pop singer also teases in her long-awaited second studio album, which she expects to release in 2025, coming four years after her debut ‘Lady Jesus’. This new era will find the singer moving away from the “fire and passion and intensity” of previous projects, to instead lean into “coldness” that she has “always really looked up to in other woman artists”.
