The unsung heroes behind the mixing desk will be celebrated next February at the 2025 MPEG Awards — the only ceremony of its kind in Australia that recognises excellence in music production and sound engineering.

Produced by Music Producer and Engineers’ Guild of Australia, the MPEG Awards will present 11 categories including the coveted lifetime achievement award and, for the first time, overseas achievement.

Other categories include producer of the year, engineer of the year, mix engineer of the year, breakthrough producer of the year, writer producer of the year, self producing artist of the year, mastering engineer of the year, studio of the year and outstanding community work (individual or team).

Nominees and winners will be judged on works when the music was released into the market from September 1st ,2023 to August 31st, 2024. Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, organisers say, but needn’t be an MPEG member (they’re encouraged to join if they are nominated).

The window for nominations closes tonight, December 10th at midnight.

The 2025 MPEG Awards will be held February 26th, 2025 in Sydney. Sponsors include microphones specialist Neumann.

The Guild launched in 2022 to provide a voice for its members, and to represent their commercial interests and community through advocacy and engagement. Its include producer/engineer Anna Laverty, alongside foundation directors Cath Haridy and Tom Larkin, and boasts such foundational members as Mark Opitz, Nick Launay, Eric J Dubowsky, Nina Las Vegas, Uncle Kevin Starkey, Virginia Read and Aroha Harawira.

“There has been a need for this organisation for years,” commented Laverty said in a statement at the time. “I know that we can make a huge difference by supporting our members and ensuring our rights are understood and advocated for.”

Today, MPEG is guided by the likes of executive director Kurt Luthy, and board nembers Xylo Aria and Laverty.
