Former Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner is dealing with a scary health crisis.

The 72-year-old former reality television star revealed thathe is currently battling an incurable and slow form of bone marrow cancer known as Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia in a new interview with People Magazine on Wednesday, December 11.

Turner shared that he received a “blood disorder” diagnosis around February of this year, which led to a biopsy and a cancer diagnosis in March. He discovered the cancer after going to an orthopedic surgeon for a shoulder injury he received playing pickleball three years prior. Due to his time on the ABC series and other life commitments, he admitted he put off the doctor’s visit.

Around that time, Turner appeared to be happily married to Theresa Nist, whom he proposed to during the first season of The Golden Bachelor and ultimately wed in January 2024. Fans were shocked by the news of their divorce in April 2024. Now, Turner revealed that his cancer played a pivotal role in that decision.

“I think it’s time, also because it probably will clear up a lot of mystery around what happened back in February, March and April,” Turner said in the interview. “As Theresa and I were trying very hard to find our lifestyle and where we were going to live and how we were going to make our life work, I was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer.”

“Unfortunately, there’s no cure for it. So that weighs heavily in every decision I make,” he added. “It was like 10 tons of concrete were just dropped on me. And I was a bit in denial for a while, I didn’t want to admit to it.”

He pointed out that Nist, 71, also struggled with the news despite trying to be understanding and supportive of Turner.

“Certainly, it was hard for me,” he said. “But the conversation was brief and I think [she was] a little bit awestruck by the news. So understandable.”

“I wanted my life to continue on as normal as possible, and that led me to believing that as normal as possible more meant spending time with my family, my two daughters, my two son-in-laws, my granddaughters,” he explained. “And the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority.”

Despite Turner and Gist’s divorce, he also made it clear that he holds fond memories and best wishes for her.

“That glamour and starstruck, whirlwind time was really a cherished memory,” he said. “It was wonderful, and I certainly wish it would’ve had a different ending, that we would’ve found our way, that we would’ve found solutions to a problem. And most of all, that I would not have had a diagnosis that so strongly influenced my decisions and the direction I went.”
