Tibet House Unveils Initial Artist Lineup for 38th Annual Carnegie Hall Benefit Concert: Philip Glass Ensemble, Laurie Anderson, Angélique Kidjo, Arooj Aftab and More
December 19, 2024
Tibet House has officially unveiled the initial artist lineup for its 38th annual benefit concert, carrying on its legacy of esteemed, star-studded stagings for its vital cause. On March 3, the 38-year cultural advocacy organization will return to Carnegie Hall’s hallowed Stern Auditorium with another expansive program of intrepid artists and cultural figureheads, curated by longtime Artistic Directors Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson. Beyond the iconic experimentalists at the helm, today’s announcement adds five artists to a bill renowned for spurring unforgettable one-night-only collaborations.
In keeping with its eclectic history, the 38th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert will welcome a wide range of creative perspectives. These voices include regular participants like Tibetan composer, multi-instrumentalist and activist Tenzin Choegyal, who has brought the sound of the Tibetan nomads to the event for several years and collaborated with Anderson on the Grammy-nominated 2019 album Songs from The Bardo. The storied electro-acoustic Scorchio Quartet will also return after more than 20 years with the benefit, and New York-based Ukrainian punk ensemble Gogol Bordello will make its second appearance following an anthemic closing set at the 37th benefit.
Two new artists are also confirmed for the 2025 benefit so far. Arooj Aftab will take the stage amid a meteoric rise; after her Grammy-winning reworkings of traditional Sufi ghazals on 2021’s Vulture Prince, the genre-bending Pakistani-American singer and composer is nominated again for her 2024 follow-up Night Reign, which centers the 18th-century Urdu poetry of Mah Laqa Bai Chanda. The initial program is completed by the five-time Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo, whose singular Afrobeat-jazz fusion–inflected by her Beninese-French background–met with Glass’ orchestral minimalism on 2014’s IFÉ. Uma Thurman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Arden Wohl and Jonah Freeman will serve as the evening’s honorary chairs, and more artists will be announced as the event approaches.
Tickets for the 38th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert are on sale now at carnegiehall.com. All proceeds from the show will support Tibet House US, the storied non-profit cultural institution founded at the urging of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to ensure the survival of Tibet’s vibrant civilization and culture in exile.
