The deep musical history of North Carolina will be in the spotlight via the new PBS series Shaped by Sound, which will premiere Feb. 6 with an episode dedicated to Durham, N.C.-reared Iron & Wine. SPIN is debuting a performance of the Sam Beam-led project’s “All in Good Time,” which is nominated for a Grammy for Best American Roots Song.

The clip finds Beam accompanied by a full band and shadow puppeteers from the Emmy-winning collective Manual Cinema. Iron & Wine will be on tour throughout the spring, including a March 20 appearance at the Garden State 20th anniversary concert in Los Angeles.

Airing weekly on PBS North Carolina, the PBS app and YouTube through May 1, additional Shaped by Sound episodes will feature Superchunk, Nnenna Freelon, Reuben Vincent, Alice Gerrard, Sluice, Sonny Miles, Mipso, Blue Cactus, Shirlette Ammons, Town Mountain, Blue Footed Boobies and Fancy Gap. “North Carolina has a tremendously vibrant music scene,” says host/producer James Mieczkowski. “Music helps shape who we are as people and as a community. Through working on this series with such a diverse group of North Carolina musicians, I’ve come to understand we all can find common ground within sounds that offer a sense of place and belonging. We hope viewers are inspired by the series and the artists’ profound connections to our state and its culture.”

Shaped by Sound was created with support from Come Hear NC, a new program from the North Carolina Music Office within the state’s Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. North Carolina is one of the first four states to create a Music Office to advocate for musicians, music educators and industry professionals.
