Get ready, Glastonbury: here’s Neil Young’s new song ‘Big Change Is Coming’ – his first with The Chrome Hearts

Now aged 79, the singer, songwriter and guitarist has been performing with The Chrome Hearts lately – a band which comprises Micah Nelson on guitar, Corey McCormick on bass, Anthony Logerfo on drums, and Spooner Oldham on Farfisa organ.

Today (January 17), the band have dropped their first single, a boisterous, defiant track called ‘big change is coming’.

Stylised in all lower-case, the debut single captures a rock song in its purest form. “Big change is coming, you know what you gotta do/ Big change is coming, could be bad or it could be good,” Young promises throughout, while huge guitars and drums drive the track forward.

The song sheds light on all of the moving parts of the modern world and reflects on the feeling of wanting to be heard.

“For seven decades, his songs have addressed where life has been and where it is going,” reads a press release (via Noise11). “‘big change is coming’ takes another big bold step in looking at where that might be. The way this new song confronts the big questions facing life right now makes it an instant thriller”.

‘Big change is coming’ comes as Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts are set to perform as Glastonbury headliners later this summer.

The singer announced that he had been booked for the festival earlier this month, but would be backing out due to it feeling like “a corporate turn-off”. Just days after making the post, he shared another update, saying that he had overturned his decision and would in fact be appearing at the 2025 instalment as one of the three headliners.

So far, the only confirmed artist is Rod Stewart, who will play the Sunday afternoon Legends Slot, although Nile Rodgers & Chic are also known to be performing at Glasto 2025. This comes as the singer shared by accident that they would also be returning to the Worthy Farm site while accepting an award last year.

Other rumoured headliners include Olivia Rodrigo, Sam Fender, The 1975, Taylor Swift and Stevie Wonder. The full line-up for the festival is usually shared in March.

As for other Neil Young news, the folk icon recently announced that he is set to release his “lost” album ‘Oceanside Countryside’ from the ‘70s, and shared his praise for the “great” new Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.
