Pnau spins exclusive French Touch DJ set on Apple Music: ‘It’ll get you on your feet’
Pnau is ringing in Christmas with some French Touch.
The Sydney trio of brothers Nick and Sam Littlemore, and fellow electronic wizard Peter Mayes, drop an exclusive beat-mixed DJ set on Apple Music, part of the streaming giant’s big push into dance culture.
Clocking-in just shy of an hour, ‘A Bout De Souffle’ (which roughly translates to ‘out of puff’) is a selection of Pnau’s favorite French tunes, and includes cuts from Cassius, Justice, Bob Sinclar and Martin Solveig.
French Touch “was a hugely influential musical movement for us,” Nick Littlemore tells TIO, “particularly when Pete and I when we were making our Sambanova album. It was heavily influence by French disco. We were hearing the first records coming out of France, long before the revolution, because Pete would go MIDEM every year. He’d bring back 12-inches and say, ‘this is the future’. We started sampling madly this disco stuff and discovering that dance music had a much richer history than where we had entered, which was mid-90s.”
The set is a snapshot of the scene, a little sophisticated, classy and “hopefully it’ll get you on your feet,” Littlemore adds. “Get your blood pumping a bit.”
“A lot of the time we make music that is somewhat nostalgic,” he continues. “We have skirted more modern things of late. ‘Cold Heart’ errs on the side of nostalgic dance. It went from more of a classic sound than trying to do something that is upfront, that is happening in the clubs today.”
Naturally, ‘A Bout De Souffle’ features Elton John and Dua Lipa’s ‘Cold Heart,’ which has led the U.K. and Australian singles charts, and helped Elton land a U.K. No. 1 album.
Pnau remixed the Rocket Man mashup, just one nugget in an collection of material cooked up in the studio, the rest of which has yet to reach our ears.
By way of thanks, Elton invited the lads to appear overnight on an all-star Zoom call, alongside the likes of Stevie Wonder, Miley Cyrus and Damon Albarn.
The new DJ mix drops on Apple Music alongside a collection of summer playlists and live sets from Australian and New Zealand artists, stretching across a range of genres and tastes.
After a more than a year in development, Apple Music recently unleashed thousands of DJ mixed sets on its platform.
The initial rollout included Mixmag’s entire collection of mixes dating back to 1992; and more than 100 recordings from Tomorrowland, including sets from Alesso, Amelie Lens, Carl Cox, Charlotte de Witte, David Guetta, Diplo, Hardwell, Major Lazer, Martin Garrix, The Chainsmokers and Tiësto.
