Episode 113 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media Network, features the return of bluegrass legend Del McCoury. JamBase’s Andy Kahn again interviewed the guitarist about the Del McCoury Band‘s new album, Almost Proud, that will be released on Friday, February 18.

McCoury was previously interviewed by Kahn at the 2019 High Sierra Music Festival. This time, the 83-year-old guitarist and Kahn spoke remotely and primarily focused on the Del McCoury Band’s new album, Almost Proud.

The conversation took place near the end of last year and began with McCoury sharing what he’s been up to during the COVID-19 pandemic and how he adjusted to life after being forced off the road from touring for the first time in his career that began over six decades ago. McCoury then talked about how that time off helped lead him to the songs that he recorded on Almost Proud. The break allowed the veteran musician to revisit several years worth of songs that in one way or another had made it into a collection that ended up being the source of the songs on the record.

McCoury also discussed recruiting renowned guitarist and singer Vince Gill for the song “Honky Tonk Nights.” The interview also touched on McCoury’s songwriting process, specifically the pair of originals on the new record, “Running Wild” and “The Misery You’ve Earned.” Other topics included recording at John Prine’s now-closed Nashville recording studio, how Del’s approach to recording and singing has evolved over his career, the upcoming DelFest music festival and much more.
