Episode 100 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media Network, features an interview with Trey Anastasio Band bassist Dezron Douglas. JamBase’s Scott Bernstein spoke with Douglas about his first tour as a member of TAB and more.

Dezron connected from New York City with Bernstein via video chat just a few days after TAB’s tour ended. Douglas began by speaking with Scotty about a new album the bassist is working on and hopes to release next spring.

Talk then turned to the Trey Anastasio Band. Douglas recalled how he came to become a member of the band. Dezron was first asked to stand in for Tony Markellis while the group’s founding bassist recovered from health issues. Markellis sadly passed away this past April after which Dezron joined the group on a permanent basis. Douglas had long been in the TAB orbit and shared stories of performing with various members of the band. Dezron did get to meet Tony in Oakland before one of the two 2017 TAB shows immortalized on the TAB At The Fox Theater live release and detailed their hang. Dezron then explained how he honors Markellis yet brings his own vibration to TAB.

Next, Dezron got into the process of learning Trey Anastasio‘s massive catalog including both TAB and Phish songs. From there, the pair talked about TAB’s recently completed tour and how it went for Dezron. The band made it through a number of lineup changes throughout the tour, mostly due to members of the horn section and drummer Russ Lawton testing positive for COVID.

Dezron mentioned how Lawton was key in the bassist becoming comfortable on stage with TAB. He then spoke about performing with Phish drummer Jon Fishman, who replaced Russ Lawton for the last four shows of the tour.

Finally, Dezron shared his experience on the final night of tour when saxophonist James Casey rejoined the band for three songs at Radio City Music Hall. Casey had to miss TAB’s 2021 tour while he underwent treatment for colon cancer.
