Listen: Dean Budnick Talks 25 Years of Jambands.com and More on ‘Comes A Time’ Podcast with Oteil Burbridge

Today, the latest episode of the Comes A Time podcast was released. The recorded conversation captures a discussion between host Oteil Burbrudge and Relix editor-in-chief Dean Budnick as they traverse a myriad of topics, including the 25-year history of Jambands.com, Relix magazine, and his latest endeavor with Peter Shapiro, co-authoring The Music Never Stops: What Putting on 10,000 Shows Has Taught Me About Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Magic (which just came out in paperback), and more.

As Budnick explains in the episode, he first crossed paths with Burbridge during the New York City Wetlands days, and Burbridge later appeared in the documentary Budnick directed about the venue, Wetlands Preserved: The Story of an Activist Rock Club. The two go on to discuss how the writer also saw the acclaimed bassist lending licks to the Aquarium Rescue Unit at the original HORDE show in 1992 and continued to watch the musician’s progression, eventually resulting in an extended print interview (for Hittin’ The Note) in the summer of ‘97 shortly after Burbridge joined the Allman Brothers Band.

In time, Budnick released Jam Bands and invited Oteil and the Peacemakers to perform during his October 1998 book release at the Somerville Theater. The pair continued to cross paths, serving as board members on Butch Trucks label Flying Frog Records, which leads to a spontaneous guest appearance by both ABB members with The Slip on the 1999 Jambands.com tour–as discussed on the podcast. Later, Burbridge took part in the first Jammy Awards, appearing with Frogwings in 2000.

In his time on the jam scene, Burbridge has appeared on the cover of Relix magazine with three separate groups: the Allman Brothers Band, Dead & Company, and Vida Blue. Of note, Burbridge conducted the aforementioned interview solo while co-host Mike Fionia was promoting his new comedy special.
