Watch: Stephen Marley Shares Lyrical Video for “Winding Roads” Featuring Bobby Weir and Jack Johnson

After much anticipation, Stephen Marley has turned out his first full-length release in over seven years, Old Soul. To celebrate the achievement, the eight-time Grammy Award winner has delivered the official lyrical music video for “Winding Road,” featuring Grateful Dead’s Bobby Weir and singer/songwriter Jack Johnson. “Winding Roads” is a symbolic account of life’s journey, difficulties, and ultimate salvation.  The tune serves as the send-off and final number on Old Soul. It presents interwoven guitar riffs and vocal back-and-forth courtesy of Marley, Weir, and Johnson, who collectively turned out an instant classic and the only number from the album to be recorded with a full band. 

Apart from the aforementioned participants, “Winding Road” also features Don Was and Jeff Chimenti–two players associated with Weir. The song was recorded at the Dead guitarist’s esteemed TRI Studios with the Wolf Brothers configuration, who assisted with the tune’s bluesy presentation, edged with evocative imagery that evokes the bliss of a mountainous journey and a contemplative inner dialogue that accompanies a feat of exploration. 

“You have to be true to yourself,” stated the artist via press release. “I refuse to be put into any category. I am inspired by everything. So, if I feel like I want to play some jazz music, I will go play some jazz music. Who dig it, dig it,” Stephen concluded. 

Old Soul is a superb representation of the collaboration spirit across the LP’s tracking list. Included on the set are special guests and kin, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on “Cast The First Stone” and Ziggy Marley on “There’s a Reward.” Elsewhere, Eric Clapton assists with the latest ménage take on “I Shot The Sheriff,” while Slightly Stoop appears on “Standing in Love.”
