Why Does Spotify Add Songs to My Playlist?

Spotify allows you to create playlists to suit every mood and event. So what do you do when Spotify adds seemingly random songs to your carefully curated playlist? Here are the most likely causes and how to fix it.

If you’ve been meticulously crafting a playlist on Spotify to fit a specific mood, it can be incredibly frustrating to find songs added seemingly at random. Has someone else been adding songs to your playlist? Well, not exactly. Here’s why Spotify is adding songs to your playlist, and how to stop it from happening.

Autoplay being enabled is a common culprit when it comes to random songs appearing in your playlist. Whether you’ve turned it on intentionally, or it was just turned on by default, Autoplay will continue to play similar songs to what was being played, contributing to additional songs appearing on your playlists.

If you have fewer than 15 songs on your Spotify playlist, the platform will continue adding songs based on the ones you’ve already added, in a bid to be helpful.

Further, the ‘Enhance’ feature is a toggle at the top of a playlist that enables songs similar to those already on your playlist to be added — as long as that feature is enabled, Spotify will add a similar song to your playlist for every song you add manually.

Sometimes it might not be your own playlists in which you notice new songs appearing. Listening to playlists curated by Spotify means that new songs might be added at any time — and there’s not really anything you can do about that. The only solution would be to manually recreate your own version of the playlist using only the songs you want to hear. Just make sure you don’t have Enhance or Autoplay enabled!

If you use the free, ad-supported version of Spotify, you might notice the platform adding random songs to your playlists. Since this is the unpaid version of Spotify, there’s not really a solution here except to upgrade to a paid account where you’ll have more flexibility with your playlists, and the ability to disable Autoplay.

To disable Autoplay using a paid Spotify account:

1. Open the Spotify app
2. Go to Settings and Autoplay
3. Toggle Playback off

To disable the Enhance feature (indicated by the word ‘Enhanced’ accompanied by some stars at the top of the playlist):

1. Open the Spotify app
2. Go to your playlist
3. Check for the Enhance feature at the top
4. Tap to disable it

If you’re using a paid Spotify account and continue having issues with Spotify adding songs to your playlist, try creating a new playlist with at least 15 songs. Ensure that the enhance feature and autoplay option are both disabled.
