Singer Liam Gallagher, formerly of Oasis, and guitarist John Squire, formerly of Stone Roses, have they’ve joined forces for a collaborative album set to release next year. The duo have already unveiled their first single, “Just Another Rainbow,” scheduled for release on Jan. 5.

Expressing his admiration for Squire, Gallagher emphasized not only the guitarist’s prowess but also his songwriting skills. In a statement, Gallagher remarked, “I think John’s a top songwriter. Everyone always bangs on about him as a guitarist, but he’s a top songwriter, too, man, no two ways about it as far as I’m concerned.” He continued to praise the quality of Squire’s music, highlighting the scarcity of his work in the public domain, whether with Stone Roses or as a solo artist.

The collaboration between Gallagher and Squire had been hinted at for some time, with Gallagher proclaiming in a tweet last October that their joint effort would be “the best record since Revolver.” Their musical history includes Squire’s guest appearance during Gallagher’s performance of “Champagne Supernova” at Knebworth last year, reminiscent of an Oasis show that took place in 1996.

Squire provided insight into the upcoming single, stating, “To me, the most obvious take on ‘Just Another Rainbow’ is that it’s about disappointment, and the sentiment is that you never get what you really want.” Squire found it intriguing that the track, despite its theme, stands out as one of the most uplifting they’ve created together.

The album, produced by Greg Kurstin, who also contributes bass, features Joey Waronker on drums. Watch a teaser video for their collaboration below.
