After request from Adele, Spotify removes shuffle button as default album streaming optionSpotify

For years, the shuffle button was the default for album streaming on Spotify. Now, due in large part to Adele‘s request that the platform remove this option from her latest LP, 30, Spotify has substituted its default shuffle button with a new default button: the play button.

“As Adele mentioned, we are excited to share that we have begun rolling out a new Premium feature that has been long requested by both users and artists to make play the default button on all albums. For those users still wishing to shuffle an album, they can go to the Now Playing View and select the shuffle toggle,” Chris Macowski, head of music communications at Spotify, told The Verge.

BBC was the first to report the Spotify shift’s association with Adele, who attributed her ask to the painstaking and thoughtful curation of an album’s tracklist. “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our tracklisting for no reason,” the vocalist said in a recent tweet.

Prior to this change in feature, which will be visible only to Premium users at this time, Spotify would play an LP’s songs in a randomized order. To stream the tracklist in order, a listener would need to individually select each song.
