Ariana Grande Jokes About ‘Insufferable’ Press Cycle for ‘Wicked’

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have been making headlines recently for their standout performances as Glinda and Elphaba in Wicked, as well as their emotional moments in interviews during the movie’s press tour. Now, it seems Grande is also in on the viral jokes.

In a conversation with Variety published on Tuesday, December 10, the 31-year-old actress sat down with actor Paul Mescal as part of the outlet’s Actors on Actors series. In the chat, Mescal alluded to the various Wicked-related interviews in which Erivo and Grande are often seen crying and holding each other’s hands.

“I’m watching you guys in the press tour,” Mescal said. “You’re obviously in love with each other.”

Grande offered a hilarious reply, saying “Insufferable. Yes. We’re horrible. It’s bad.”

While the “We Can’t Be Friends” hitmaker doesn’t seem to be bothered by the press tour jokes, one thing she isn’t playing about is the love and admiration she has for her co-star.

“Cynthia is just an absolute brilliant gift of a human being,” Grande said in the chat with Mescal, joking that the two have seen the movie “108,000 times at this point.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Grande detailed the process of performing the songs and cutting the studio tracks for Wicked. As many fans know, Grande and Erivo performed the songs live on set during production but they had previously pre-recorded tracks for the rehearsal process.

“It was fun to get [into the studio] and lay down the songs,” Grande said. “We did sing everything live on set. But I remember the first day I got there, I really wanted to wear Glinda’s shoes right away, just because it helps find the body and the physicality.”

Fans can look forward to special sing-along screenings of Wicked on Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25.
