SPIN Records’ newest recording artist—Los Angeles-based dance music producer, singer, and DJ Ava Lake—releases her new single “Busy” today (Dec. 6), available across all streaming platforms.

Packed with confidence, energy, and a killer beat, Lake believes “Busy” is destined to become a dance-floor favorite, offering an empowering anthem for all the free spirits in this world.

Lake is an artist on the rise, known for her powerful vocals, dynamic production, and knack for crafting tracks that resonate with confidence and energy.

“I could not be more excited to sign with SPIN Records,” says Lake. “For the past year, I have been working on my sound and simultaneously sending my tracks to my dream record labels. After continuing to hone in my sound, I was able to find a home for my first release in two years at SPIN Records, an iconic imprint from SPIN Magazine.”

SPIN teamed up with Virgin Music Group’s Greater Than Distribution to launch its first record label, SPIN Records in March 2024.

We chatted with Lake about her new single and the inspiration behind it.

What inspired you to make “Busy?”

I was inspired to make “Busy” after a weekend that I felt left out from a social gathering but couldn’t have attended anyway because I had a show I was playing. The track was about reclaiming my time and power and not getting sucked into FOMO. Sonically, I was inspired by Biscits, Chris Lake, and Dom Dolla. I wanted to include my vocals but not detract from the song being played in a club. Creating a balance between a vocally-interesting track and a banging drop was the mission and I feel like it mirrored the emotional content of being vulnerable but also strong and powerful.

What new production elements or directions did you find yourself taking?

“Busy” went through many rewrites and rounds of revision. Initially, this track had a whole verse and rap component that I omitted because I wanted to hone in on the venue I intended the track for: the club. I wanted a minimal drop and a singable verse with a beat that keeps listeners dancing. I had fun with the arrangement on this track adding synths to the second half of the drop bringing in some early 2000s dance influences. I am always trying to work in some of the sound design of tracks I grew up loving in my young teenager years.

What genre do you feel might characterize this track?

This track is a mix between tech house and dance-pop. I wanted Busy to bang in a club but also be singable for music lovers. The beat is pure house while the songwriting takes influences from dance pop, rap, and spoken word.

What kind of journey do you want listeners to go on while listening? And what feeling do you want them to walk away with?

This track is best paired with movement. I envisioned listeners hearing this track dancing at a club, going for an early morning run, or hanging out at a pre-game about to hit the town. I want people to walk away from this track feeling confident, sassy, having a main character moment. Whether it is glamming for a night out, jamming with the homies, or driving to the destination, “Busy” is the track to boost the mood.

What’s next for Ava Lake?

Lots of music! I have refrained from releasing music for the past two and a half years to hone in on my craft and feel confident about my music. This release is the opening of the floodgates for more music. The plan is to release one track a month for the next year starting in January and to continue nurturing my supporters and community. Starting in the new year I will also be live streaming twice a week; one for music production on Mondays, and one for DJ sets tentatively on Fridays. Can’t wait for what is to come.
