Avril Lavigne recently announced she is making a “Sk8er Boi” movie. The new project is based on her classic 2002 song and is part of her upcoming plans to mark the 20th anniversary of her first studio record, Let Go, released in 2002.
As a guest on the She Is The Voice show, the artist touched on the meaning behind her latest single “Bite Me.” She also spoke about the longstanding story behind “Sk8er Boi.”

“Bite Me” has been out for a month, and Lavigne has revealed her new album is on the way. Her presently untitled album will be her seventh, projected to be released in February, according to Lavigne.
“It’s really about self-worth, self-respect, knowing what you deserve and not going back down that road,” she says about her latest single.
Also in the new year, Lavigne will commemorate her debut album. June 4 will mark 20 years since its release.
“Next year is my 20th anniversary from the first record, so next year is a big year,” Lavigne says. “We’re really excited about it, and there’s a tour lined up.”
Expanding more on her hit single “Sk8er Boi,” Lavigne admits her deep-rooted love for the song. The artist also reveals her future plans to make a film based on the song’s lyrical storyline.
“To this day, Sk8er Boi is one of my favorite songs to play live,” Lavigne says. “Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows. It keeps getting brought back up and people always reference it to me. I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”
Additionally, Lavigne recalls the story behind “Sk8er Boi” and its significance.
“You know what it was like in high school. You have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps, jocks. It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love,” she continues.
“The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl, but she’s too cool for him. Then five years from now, she sits at home feeding the baby. She’s all alone and down the road wishes she would have followed her heart and not live up to society’s expectations.”
