Backline Suggests Resources for Musicians Impacted by the California Wildfires

Wildfires are burning in parts of Los Angeles after the ravenous Santa Ana winds, coupled with dry conditions, fueled flames that caused the breakout of five regional blazes, forcing 100,000 residents from their homes and five deaths. Given the area’s fertile crescent status for musicians, Backline has extended a list of suggested resources to support artists through emergency relief and mental health services.

“Know that Backline is here for you and that you are not alone. You can reach out to us via our case submission form and a Case Manager will contact you to help you get the long term support you need. If you need immediate assistance, please reach out to the Disaster Distress Hotline for free 24/7 support by calling 1-800-985-5990,” the mental health and resource hub shares.

MusiCares, the nonprofit organization that “provides crisis relief, preventive care, recovery resources, and need-based financial assistance for people across all music professions,” extended its assistance, writing on social media:

“Please encourage your music industry colleagues and friends that have been impacted by the fires to contact MusiCares now and in the weeks to come. We can consider emergency funds related to evacuation and relocation costs, instrument replacement/repair, home damage, medical care, mental health services, & other essential living needs.”

They also extended direct lines of communication for musicians to reach out to the MusiCares team, including phone 1-800-687-422 and email: musicaresrelief@musicares.org. For those unaffected and looking to help, a donation link was made available to continue giveback efforts.

As for mental health resources, Backline suggests artists refer to the Mental Health Coalition’s guide. They addressed the extent to which fires can impact an individual’s well-being: “Tragedies like this have far-reaching mental health implications — people may be dealing with anxiety, trauma or PTSD, grief, or other impactful mental health experiences.

“If these events are affecting your mental health, do not hesitate to seek help. You can reach out to the Disaster Distress Helpline by @samhsagov for free 24/7 support by calling 1-800-985-5990.” The Mental Health Coalition also shared a link to its Resource Library, which provides an extensive database of emergency services.

Sweet Relief Musicians Fund is “now accepting donations and applications for musicians and music industry workers impacted by the fires in Los Angeles County and surrounding areas.” Financial relief will go toward the loss of equipment, medical bills from the resulting events, and living expenses.
