Beyonce Becomes the First Black Woman to Top Billboard’s Country Chart
Beyonce makes history as the first Black woman to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with her single, ‘Texas Hold ‘Em.’
Queen Bey is making history once again, this time as the first Black woman to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, thanks to the phenomenal success of her single, “Texas Hold ‘Em.” The song, which was officially released on country radio on February 13, dethroned Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves’ duet, “I Remember Everything,” which has reigned atop the chart for 20 weeks.
Per Billboard, Beyonce also made history as the first female artist to claim the No. 1 spot on Hot Country Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs since October 1958 when the lists consolidated into the “all-encompassing genre song charts.” The only other artists who have led these charts are Ray Charles, Billy Ray Cyrus, Justin Bieber, and Morgan Wallen.
“Texas Hold ‘Em,” which also debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, has amassed 19.2 million streams and 4.8 million across all-format airplay, with 39,000 sales in the US as of February 15, according to data from Luminate.
“16 Carriages,” Beyonce’s second country single which she released alongside “Texas Hold ‘Em” on February 11, debuted at No. 9 on the Hot Country Songs chart, and started at No. 38 on the Hot 100 chart. That track has amassed 10.3 million streams, 90,000 airplay hits, and 14,000 in US sales.
Beyonce surprised fans by dropping both songs during the Super Bowl, just after her ad with Verizon aired, alongside a teaser for her upcoming album, Act II, due to release in March. The teaser, shared on Instagram, is inspired by the 1984 Western film, Paris, Texas, featuring lots of fun and funky Western motifs.
Though the official title for the new album has not actually been revealed, it is being referred to as Act II of Renaissance. The house/EDM inspired Act I dropped during the summer of 2022 and preceded an epic world tour of the same name.
