Beyonce ‘Renaissance’ Takes On the Box Office — More Projections
More projections emerge as Beyonce’s ‘Renaissance’ takes on the box office, debuting against the ‘Hunger Games’ prequel in AMC Theatres and affiliated venues.
Beyonce’s concert film, “Renaissance,” written, directed, and produced by the superstar, will play in around 2,539 domestic locations and 94 international territories, including Mexico, the UK, and Australia. The film is expected to bring in $17 million to $20 million in its opening weekend, with a global target of $30 million to $40 million.
“Renaissance,” like Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour,” is unique in that both are being distributed by AMC Theatres instead of a traditional studio. Swift’s film, which debuted in October, has generated $250 million worldwide, bringing in $92 million domestically in its opening weekend alone.
Notably, Beyonce’s concert film is more on par with concert documentaries such as Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” ($29.5 million opening in 2011) and Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” ($23 million opening in 2009). Swift’s concert film was designed as an “in-theater” concertgoing experience with a target demographic that skews younger than Queen Bey’s.
Taking a documentary approach to bring audiences backstage and behind the curtain of her latest stadium tour, Beyonce’s film features cameos from husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy, as well as artists like Diana Ross and Megan Thee Stallion. In a deal with AMC that reportedly matches that which the exhibitor arranged with Taylor Swift, Beyonce will take home around 50% of the box office earnings.
Whether the film will nab the top spot on the box office charts when it opens this weekend remains to be seen; it’ll be playing against the latest “Hunger Games” film, and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon,” while John Woo’s Christmas action film with zero dialogue, “Silent Night,” also debuts this weekend.
But movie tickets won’t hold a candle to the actual tour’s earnings, which reports a whopping $579 million worldwide — the eighth-highest-grossing tour of all time.
