Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum to Launch Jerry Garcia Exhibition, Detail Opening Weekend Celebration

Jerry Garcia: A Bluegrass Journey Exhibition at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Owensboro, Ky., has detailed its opening weekend festivities, intended to take place over three days, beginning on March 28, 2024. Besides live music, the event also boasts an immersive experience of exhibition tours, historic panel discussions, and more to celebrate Garcia’s bluegrass career. 

The exhibition follows Garcia’s musical evolution from folk and bluegrass scenes in the 1960s to forming bluegrass bands such as the Black Mountain Boys. The showcase also features

pivotal moments, such as the musician’s famed road trip to explore bluegrass in 1964, highlighting collaborations with esteemed bluegrass musicians like David Grisman, Tony Rice, and Peter Rowan.

Moreover, the exhibit picks apart Garcia’s pre-Grateful Dead journey and his evolution from folk to bluegrass troubadour, providing a historical touchstone that shaped the artist’s career and sound. Also included are over 20 interviews to help tell this story, from David Nelson, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Carolyn “Mountain Girl” Garcia, Dennis McNally, Del McCoury, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Sam Bush, Vince Herman, and more. 

To assist in marking the celebratory opening, musicians will play at the Woodward Theatre over three days and pull from the bluegrass ether. Included are Leftover Salmon as the house band, Sam Grisman Project, Peter Rowan, David Nelson, Ronnie McCoury, Kyle Tuttle and others. Screenings of documentaries such as Grateful Dawg, Long Strange Trip and Festival Express will also be on display.
