On Sunday, Dec. 17, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros. concluded their residency at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. The night began with a similar approach to the musician’s prior performances at the famed venue, with a solo Weir stepping out and delivering the first tune of the night. With the arrival of each ensuing song, more players took their position on stage, working toward a big band feel. The initial half of the concert produced biblically infused material, customary for the day of the week.

Set one commenced with a stripped-down take on Bobby Darin’s “Artificial Flowers.” Weir’s solo take gave way to a three-piece take on “Friend of the Devil.” Expanding once again, with the arrival of a fourth in tow, they covered Jimmy Reed’s “Big Boss Man,” a song associated with the Grateful Dead’s late-60s, early-70s repertoire. Next, they flaunted the biblical theme of “My Brother Esau” and “Greatest Story Ever Told.” The band also took the opportunity to expand, going from a five-piece to 10, from one song to the next.

As set one continued, the band picked up “Black Throated Wind” before the arrival of the evening’s special guest, famed drummer Omar Hakim–known for his session work with Weather Report, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, and many others. Hakim managed the backbeat, giving Jay Lane a break from his assumed position. Instead, Lane helped out on keys during the night’s rendition of traditional “Samson and Delilah.”

After closing out the first half of the night with a pairing of “Weather Report Suite” with “Let It Grow,” the band merged into a set break, returning and starting the latter portion of the concert with “Me and My Uncle.” What followed was a treat for any fan of the Grateful Dead’s repertoire, including “Shakedown Street,” followed by a pairing of “Help on the Way” with “Slipknot!” They merged into “Franklin’s Tower” next, keeping spirits high with the emergence of “The Other One.”

The ensemble purposefully slowed for their display of “Morning Dew,” which gave way to the night’s final moments: An encore delivery of “Brokedown Palace.” With Weir’s Capitol Theatre residency in the books, Weir will take a break from the stage prior to his sold-out New Year’s Eve celebration in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Dec. 29 through 31.
