Crowded House Has a No. 1 In the U.S. With ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’

Thanks to the power of the small screen, Crowded House has an unexpected No. 1 in the United States.

The ARIA Hall of Fame-inducted folk-rock outfit reigns over Billboard’s Top TV Songs chart with “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” which appeared in an episode of the rebooted detective classic Magnum P.I.

Lifted from the band’s self-titled debut album, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” enjoyed a boost when it was synced to the 14^th episode of the fifth season of Magnum, which aired Oct. 25 on NBC.

According to data captured by Luminate, and published by Billboard, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” earned 4.6 million official on-demand U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads last month.

Billboard’s Top TV Songs chart is based on song and show data provided by Tunefind and ranked by a blend of data with comparative sales and streaming information tracked by Luminate.

Recorded by Neil Finn (singer, songwriter, guitar), Nick Seymour (bass) and the late drummer Paul Hester, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” is Crowded House’s best-performing song on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 2 back in April 1987.

Crowded House was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2016, in recognition of a glorious career during which they’ve sold more than 10 million albums, collected 13 ARIA Awards, and five ARIA No. 1 albums.

Their 2010 hits compilation Recurring Dream also topped the Official U.K. Albums Chart and is one of four Crowded House album to crack the top 10 in that market.

Their most recent studio album, Dreamers Are Waiting, peaked at No. 2 in Australia, No. 6 on the Official U.K. Chart, and won best adult contemporary album at the 2021 ARIA Awards.

Last year, Neil Finn signed up for worldwide representation with Good Neighbour Rights, launched in 2019 by Mushroom Group’s late founder and chairman Michael Gudinski through a partnership with music rights and royalties expert Susan Cotchin.
