Last night, Feb. 16, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds kicked off their annual self-titled Dave & Tim Mexico series, returning to Moon Palace in Riviera Maya for an eight-day jam getaway. To begin their performances for the concert vacation’s seventh presentation since its 2017 debut, the duo called on Ray Paczkowski and Russ Lawton’s duo Soule Monde and soul queen Mavis Staples; this is the first time that the getaway has featured dual openers on each day. During the headline performance, Matthews and Reynolds tapped Staples again, plus Feb. 15 series opener Jason Isbell and Matthews’ longtime vocal coach Robert Stevenson, for a historic show full of fan favorites.

Matthews and Reynolds started their set with the iconic “Big Eyed Fish,” marking the artists’ first presentation of the standard as a duo since 2003. This revival is also distinguished by being the first time the song was utilized as an opener for the pair and by the fact that it did not precede “Bartender,” a relative rarity among recent presentations. After five songs, the duo invited Isbell to the stage for a shared rendition of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer”–the singer-songwriter’s first live collaboration with Matthews. Though Mattews and Reynolds had not shared this song since 2019, Matthews offered a rendition earlier this year alongside Dinosaur Jr., which covered the song with Jason Isbell in 2023.

Next, following four songs, Matthews and Reynolds called up Staples and Stevenson for The Band’s “The Weight,” which Matthews has covered only seven times since 2003. Finally, after nine more entries, the duo closed the set with the legendary Matthews composition “Warehouse,” followed by an encore of “Sister” and “Two Step.”

Matthews and Reynolds will return to the stage tonight for their second performance in the Dave & Time Mexico series, followed by a grand finale tomorrow, Feb. 18. For information on further upcoming engagements, visit davematthewsband.com/tour. Read on for the full setlist.
