Dave Matthews Band wrapped their 2021 Tour at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden arena on Saturday night. New Orleans-based funk jamband Dumpstaphunk opened up for Dave Matthews Band both evenings.
Dumpstaphunk kicked off the evening with a five-song opening set, which included originals “Meanwhile…,” “Do You” and “Make It After All.” The band then broke into a cover of Earl King’s “Street Parade” before ending with Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On.” For the final song, Dave Matthews Band member Tim Reynolds joined on guitar, while Matthews took the stage halfway through offering his signature soulful vocals.
Dave Matthews Band saxophonist, Jeff Coffin was absent over the weekend after testing positive for Covid-19. “Ben the Sax Guy” a.k.a. Ben Golder-Novick stepped in both nights of the Garden run. Coffin joined the band in 2009 following the death of founding Dave Matthews Band member, LeRoi Moore.
Saturday’s show offered a slew of rarities and beloved fan favorites during the 23-song performance. Among the covers were Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and Sly & The Family Stone’s “I Want to Take You Higher.” As well as the tour debut of “Water Into Wine.” Dumpstamphunk’s Alex Wasily and Ashlin Parker offered horns towards the end of the main set when they joined Dave Matthews Band for “Corn Bread,” “Jimi Thing” and “I Want To Take You Higher.”
The night wrapped with a three-song encore beginning with “Christmas Song” followed by “The Last Stop” before concluding with fan-favorite “Ants Marching.”
