Dead & Company Close Out Halloween Run with Jay Lane

Last night, Dead & Company closed out their three-night Halloween run at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. The performance was notably missing Bill Kreutzmann, who had performed the previous two evenings but was again subbed by Jay Lane due to a non-COVID-19 related illness.

Kreutzmann wrote on Twitter, “It’s Halloween. Did I spook you? I’m okay & was sad to miss the end last night. I wasn’t feeling well & the show must go on. I returned to the road a little too soon & I need more rest, so I’ll be back full steam ahead to jam with you in Mexico. I can’t wait.”

Dead & Company started the show with traditional “Samson and Delilah” before diving into the Grateful Dead’s discography. Next, they played “Uncle John’s Band” > “Brown-Eyed Women,” then “Touch of Grey” before playing Halloween staples “Dire Wolf” and “Hell in a Bucket.” They closed the first set with “Lady with a Fan” and “Terrapin Station.”

The second set kicked off with “Althea,” then “Dark Star,” which led to non-stop music until the night came to a close. “Dark Star” bookended “El Paso” before the band broke into staples like “Eyes of the World,” “Fire on the Mountain” and more. They closed the set with a cover of Bonnie Dobson’s “Morning Dew” and a reprise of The Crickets “Not Fade Away,” which they played the night before. Notably missing from the setlist was “Werewolves Of London” which many would agree just wouldn’t be the same without Kreutzmann.

Dead & Company encored with “Brokedown Palace” to bring the Halloween events to a close.
