Refused’s The Shape of Punk to Come recalibrated hardcore, exposing a new generation to jazz, house, and post-punk while losing none of the heaviness. Before the Swedish pioneers head out on their farewell tour, they asked a bunch of their peers to cover those songs.

The tribute LP, dubbed The Shape of Punk to Come Obliterated, is out today via Epitaph and includes contributions from GEL, Touché Amoré, Quicksand, Snapcase, IDLES, Zulu, Fucked Up, Ho99o9, and more. GEL’s ferocious rework of “Worms of the Senses / Faculties of the Skull” opens the record, which marks a full-circle moment for their frontperson Sami Kaiser, whose introduction to live music can be traced back to Refused. Even their intense performances and willingness to change up their sound follow in the band’s image.

“Refused was one of the first shows I went to and the first time I was up front,” they say. “It was a charismatic performance and rowdy crowd, and it definitely contributed to my love of heavier music and the live shows that demonstrate the energy of the music authentically.”
