The GRAMMY Museum has announced a new solo exhibition featuring artwork by famed rock photography maven Jay Blakesberg. Dubbed RetroBlakesberg: The Music Never Stopped, the exhibit will focus exclusively on the photographer’s film shots captured over three decades—from 1978 to 2008–before his switch to digital. The art display in Los Angeles is open to the public through June 15, 2024.
Curated by Ricki and Jay Blakesberg, with consideration of Jasen Emmons, Chief Curator and VP of Curatorial Affairs at the GRAMMY Museum, RetroBlakesberg: The Music Never Stopped presents 150 select film photos featuring a wide range of artists, including Neil Young, Tracy Chapman, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, E-40, and Björk. In addition, 20 “blue” portraits of Green Day, Ice-T, The Flaming Lips, Joni Mitchell, and others were intentionally shot using the “wrong film” for the “wrong lighting” will also be featured.
As a reference to his profound dedication to the Grateful Dead, having photographed and, in turn, developed enduring friendships with the San Francisco jamband, Blakeberg’s exhibit will explore the band’s rich legacy–a central theme of his craft for decades.
“As a lifelong music fan, having my work exhibited at the GRAMMY Museum feels like a dream come true,” Jay Blakesberg offered via press release. “I’m beyond thrilled for this opportunity and honored to have my art connected to one of the world’s most iconic music institutions!”
Ricki adds, “As someone with a deep love for both photography and music, it’s been an incredible honor to work closely with my dad’s archive and curate a collection that celebrates legendary artists in such an iconic space as the GRAMMY Museum.”
Tickets to RetroBlakesberg: The Music Never Stopped are on sale now.
