While music theory is beneficial for any musician, it is not absolutely necessary to play the bass. Many great bass players have a strong intuition for the instrument and have learned to play by ear. However, understanding music theory can enhance your skills as a bass player by giving you a deeper understanding of chord progressions, scales, and rhythm. It can also make it easier to collaborate with other musicians and interpret sheet music. But most importantly, practice and experience are key to becoming a skilled bass player. So, while music theory is a valuable tool, it is not a strict requirement for playing the bass.
