There is no one sister who invented rock and roll. However, the proclaimed “Queen of Rock and Roll,” Sister Rosetta Tharpe, was a highly influential figure in shaping the genre in the 1940s and 1950s. She was a skilled guitar player and a compelling singer capable of reaching the emotional heights that came to define rock music. But there is no truth to the idea that any single person, man or woman, created rock and roll. It was an organic blend of various music styles and artists, including blues, country, gospel, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, among others, that ultimately created the rock and roll sound.
