Why are grand pianos so big?

Grand pianos are larger than other types of pianos because their large size allows for a greater physical length of the strings, which in turn creates a fuller, more resonant sound. The larger soundboard also contributes to a better tone. The longer the strings, the better the piano can produce lower notes, so the grand piano is especially good at deep, rich tones.
