Performers sometimes use two microphones as a part of a technique known as “spanking” or “slapping.” This involves striking the main vocal microphone (often a handheld or wireless mic) against a second stationary or “dead” microphone to create a sharp, rhythmic noise that can be heard through the PA system. The intended effect is to emphasize percussive vocal elements and/or to draw attention to specific parts of a song. The second mic should be close to the first to ensure the impact is effectively picked up and broadcast.
