Meta’s answer to Twitter may be getting a bit more TikTok-like—a new report suggests the ability to add music to posts may be coming.

The feature is not new to Meta’s other social media apps like Facebook and Instagram, but it would represent a new feature for Threads. The X/(Twitter) competitor may focus on adding music to posts with the looming TikTok ban, which focuses on music discovery. The new feature would also add yet another revenue stream for music owners.

The feature was first spotted by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, which suggests the feature has been referenced in app code. The feature is no where near a public beta, but fast-tracking it wouldn’t be surprising with the upcoming TikTok ban in the United States.

The outgoing Biden administration says it will leave up enforcement of the ban to the incoming Trump administration. One of Trump’s guests of honor for his January 20 inauguration will be TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

The development of Threads seems to be bringing it more in line with competitors like X and Bluesky. TechCrunch reports that Meta is also working on the possibility to set a display name and adding a cover image to profiles. Currently the profile section of Threads works more like Instagram, with a tiny avatar and a small text bio with the possibility to add links.

Elon Musk-owned X/(Twitter) has refused to license music for the entire platform, shutting down talks with major music publishers. So a new revenue stream via Threads would be a welcome change for music owners.

Musk won a victory in court in March 2024 when most of the lawsuit brought by 17 music publishers was dismissed. Sony Music, Universal Music, and other NMPA members sued the social media platform in June 2023 for copyright infringement of more than 1,700 songs. They jointly sought $250 million in damages.
