After a Jane Doe’s Diddy lawsuit was amended to name Jay-Z as a defendant, Jay-Z files a motion arguing the accuser should have to reveal her name.

Just a day after a lawsuit filed against Sean “Diddy” Combs was amended to name Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) as a defendant, Carter has filed a motion arguing the Jane Doe accuser should be required to litigate under her real name.

Jane Doe’s lawsuit initially identified Carter as “Celebrity A,” and accuses him of raping her alongside Combs when she was 13 years old in 2000 at a VMAs afterparty. Carter’s attorneys assert the allegations are “patently false” in a “campaign of extortion” by attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents an array of accusers who have filed cases against Combs.

“Mr. Carter should not have to defend himself in the brightest of spotlights against an accuser who hides in complete darkness,” writes Carter’s attorney, Alex Spiro. “Mr. Carter deserves to know the identity of the person who is effectively accusing him — in sensationalized, publicity-hunting fashion — of criminal conduct, demanding massive financial compensation, and tarnishing a reputation earned over decades.”

While plaintiffs in sexual abuse lawsuits can sometimes proceed under pseudonyms if it’s determined there is a strong risk of retaliation, this is relatively rare. Judges have already required Jane Doe accusers in several of the other civil suits filed against Combs to disclose their names.

Carter’s attorneys cite those earlier rulings, arguing that the accuser has not met any of the key requirements to retain anonymity in her litigation. “Mr. Carter now is entitled to defend himself against these allegations with benefit of all the protections and mechanisms available to defendants,” writes Spiro. “To be sure, attorney Buzbee’s game has been to prevent Mr. Carter from defending himself while punching below the belt. Today, that game is at an end and Mr. Carter’s defense has begun — starting with plaintiff’s unmasking.”

Buzbee has earlier claimed to represent 120 individuals who have alleged being victimized by Combs, and has since filed over a dozen civil lawsuits on behalf of these plaintiffs, many of whom have wished to remain anonymous.
