Jay-Z Officially Served in Jane Doe Sexual Assault Action Following Push to Reveal Accuser’s Identity
After unsuccessfully attempting to reveal the identity of the Jane Doe plaintiff accusing him of rape, Jay-Z has officially been served with the ugly lawsuit.
More specifically, the head of security at the Roc Nation founder’s splashy Malibu mansion was served with the complaint, the affidavit of service shows.
According to the same document, this security professional “refused to provide name” but did confirm the expansive beachside property as the home of Jay-Z as well as the NFL halftime performer Beyoncé.
Subsequently, an additional copy of the complaint (plus, among other things, a declaration from attorney Tony Buzbee supporting his client’s push to proceed anonymously) made its way to the same address through the mail, the affidavit of service indicates.
Stated differently, despite Jay-Z’s aggressive effort to tamp down the highly problematic lawsuit – which accuses him of raping the now-adult plaintiff when she was 13 years old – the legal battle is in full swing.
And while we don’t know exactly how said battle will unfold or which career consequences it may bring about, we aren’t without related knowledge heading into the new year.
First, as initially highlighted, the court is opting against granting Jay-Z’s request to reveal the accuser’s identity. The presiding judge has emphasized that the position could well change as the case plays out – “especially if and when the parties engage in discovery in earnest,” to quote the relevant order.
But logic and evidence strongly suggest that Jay-Z, having already taken aim at alleged inconsistencies in the accuser’s story, would rather avoid discovery altogether. On top of fueling a mountain of inherently less-than-positive coverage, a protracted courtroom confrontation could result in career fallout for the 55-year-old.
Even now, one needn’t stretch the imagination to see why brands may well be hesitant to launch fresh partnerships involving Jay-Z – who, of course, could ultimately prevail in the case. (That the allegations also involve Diddy, who’s scheduled to head to trial on criminal charges in May, definitely isn’t helping the situation.)
At present, though, the NFL is sticking by Brooklyn-born Jay-Z on paper and, as demonstrated by Beyoncé’s above-noted halftime show, in practice.
Then there’s the intensifying sub-dispute between Jay-Z and the previously mentioned Tony Buzbee. Representing over 200 alleged victims of Diddy, Buzbee was slapped with a 236-page extortion lawsuit from Jay-Z earlier in December.
The Houston-based attorney fired back with a sweeping complaint of his own, accusing Roc Nation of working to compel former clients to levy lawsuits against his firm.
Lastly, Jay-Z is fending off renewed paternity charges from his alleged “illegitimate son,” and the case against him and Diddy is seemingly destined for additional twists yet. To be sure, while the subject isn’t receiving too much attention, the appropriate suit maintains that an as-yet-unnamed female celebrity watched the two assault the alleged victim.
