Kesha celebrates 15th anniversary of debut album ‘Animal’: “You were that bitch”
Kesha has celebrated the 15th anniversary of her debut album ‘Animal’ with a reflective post, describing the project as “that bitch”.
The US singer-songwriter released the record on January 1, 2010. It reached Number One on the Billboard 200, and Number Eight on the official UK albums chart.
Sharing a series of images from that era on social media this week, Kesha wrote: “I spent my whole life learning the art of songwriting from my mom, an iconic songwriter herself, so when ‘Animal’ came out, it was a culmination of the sounds of growing up, the sounds of falling in love, heartbreak, the sounds of coming of age and I had no idea what these songs would open up for me and what kind of life I would be creating for myself just by putting these songs out in the world.”
She continued: “I’m so happy I did, and so happy you’ve connected to it the way that you have, and continue to do so.”
Kesha went on to reflect on her hit single ‘Tik Tok’ achieving “its biggest streaming day just a few days ago”, following her recent live performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.
“Just goes to show that we all go through these same pivotal feelings and emotions growing up. I’m so happy to have grown up with all of you,” the pop star continued.
“Happy anniversary ‘Animal’. I had no idea you were that bitch. But turns out you totally are.” You can see the post below.
In addition to ‘Tik Tok’, Kesha’s debut LP boasted the hit singles ‘Your Love Is My Drug’, ‘Blah Blah Blah’ and ‘Take It Off’.
Kesha is expected to release a new album at some point this year, having launched a new independent label called Kesha Records in 2024.
Last year’s single ‘Joyride’ ushered in a new era for the singer, marking her first release – and one she owns the rights to – since departing Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records and RCA Records.
She has since released another track, ‘Delusional’, and appeared on a collaborative remix of Charli XCX’s ‘Spring Breakers’.
Kesha announced last autumn that she was devising a 10-year plan to “dismantle” the music industry, after settling her long-running legal battle with Dr. Luke.
In 2025, Kesha is due to play a number of UK live shows. These include a slot at Mighty Hoopla in London, where she’ll perform alongside Ciara, Kate Nash, Pixie Lott, Loreen, Vengaboys, Mutya, Jamelia, Jojo, Erika Jayne, G Flip and Daniel Bedingfield.
She also has two headline gigs coming up on these shores, taking place in Manchester and Glasgow in May. Find any remaining tickets here.
Kesha released her fifth and latest album, ‘Gag Order’, in 2023. It marked her final project for Kemosabe and RCA.
