Hi Lady Decibel, how are you guys?

Hello!  We’ve been doing great, thanks for asking!

What drew you to ‘Say So’ specifically as a track to remix? Were you already fans of Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj?

We’ve casually followed both Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat over the years, but we’re huge fans of their collaboration on “Say So.” The song became a major hit in the U.S., getting plenty of radio plays—that’s how it caught our attention originally.

How did you balance keeping the iconic elements of ‘Say So’ intact while still delivering something fresh?

For our remix, we built the entire instrumental from scratch to give it our own high-energy, danceable vibe. We wanted to keep the essence of “Say So” but make it feel fresh and ready for the dancefloor. To tie everything together, we re-arranged the vocal sections to flow better with the new instrumental, playing around with placement and pacing to really amplify the energy. It was all about finding that balance between staying true to the original and giving it a completely new feel.

What emotions or moments were you aiming to highlight in your remix that might differ from the original?

The original had a slower BPM and a chill Disco vibe, but for our remix, we wanted to turn up the energy and make it super dancey, something that would really grab people’s attention on the dancefloor. We only kept part of Nicki Minaj’s rap and used it to create a new verse that fit perfectly with our remix. That gave us room to add a lead synth section, kind of like a guitar solo but with a ravey, old-school vibe. Honestly, we’re so happy with how it all came together—the sounds, the arrangement, the structure—it really captures the nostalgic rave energy we were going for.

How did you approach creating a groove and rhythm that felt punchier and more dancefloor-focused than the original?

We wanted to give the track a Euro-style twist, so we leaned into a Eurodance-inspired structure and vibe for the remix. We added a thick low end, a punchy kick, and this high-energy, old-school lead sound. Plus, we bumped the BPM up to 142 to give it more speed and energy. The faster acapella adds to that high-energy vibe, and we layered in a lot of drums to give it that old-school rave kind of feel. It all came together to make it super punchy and perfect for the dancefloor.

Can you share any specific tools or techniques that were vital in shaping the overall sound palette of the remix?

Yes, first, we set the BPM to 142, giving the track a super energetic feel right away. Next, we layered a lot of drums, especially rave-style top loops, to really drive that old-school energy. The Euro-style transitional cymbal crashes were a must to capture that classic Euro sound. We also added our signature synth lead to give it that “Lady Decibel flair.” The main synth melody you hear throughout the remix comes from the virtual synth VPS Avenger by Vengeance. We used a Trance Gate patch from one of their Trance packs to give it that nostalgic old-school Eurotrance vibe.

How did you use layering in the production to build tension and release and keep listeners engaged?

We used layering to build tension and release by stacking elements progressively throughout the track. For instance, we started with subtle pads and a simple drum loop, then gradually introduced rave-style top loops, energetic basslines, and gradually opened up the filters on the main synth to create anticipation. To build tension further, we used risers, transitional cymbal crashes, and automation on filters to sweep frequencies, making the build-ups feel more intense. In the drops, we opened up the filters on the main synth and made it louder, pushing it more forward in the mix for maximum impact. By constantly adding or tweaking layers, we kept the energy evolving and ensured the track stayed engaging from start to finish.

How do you think your influence from 90s and 2000s Dance music carries through in your take on ‘Say So’?

Our love for 90s and 2000s Dance music heavily influenced this remix. We wanted to bring that classic Eurodance and Eurotrance feel to ‘Say So’ by using iconic elements like a punchy kick, a driving bassline, and high-energy synth leads. We also added rave-style top loops, gated synth melodies, and those signature transitional cymbal crashes that define the era. By increasing the BPM and layering these nostalgic sounds, we gave the track that old-school energy while keeping it modern and fun. It’s a fresh take that nods to the golden age of Dance music while complementing Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj’s style.

Was there a specific audience or mood you were envisioning when designing the energy of this remix?

Our music is for the modern raver, and when we were designing the mood for this remix, we really wanted to bring back that PLUR vibe from the 90s and 2000s rave scene. We aimed to capture that positive, high-energy feeling where people are just out to have a great time, dance, and connect. With the punchy kicks, rave-style drums, and those uplifting synths, we wanted it to feel like a throwback to the freedom and joy of those old-school raves. We’re all about that feeling of unity and fun, and we wanted to keep it fresh while still honoring that classic rave energy.

How does working on tracks like ‘Say So’ help you push your boundaries as producers and refine your sound?

Working on tracks like ‘Say So’ helps us push our boundaries by taking a popular, mainstream track and giving it our own unique spin. It challenges us to blend different genres and influences, mixing modern pop elements with the energy and sounds of 90s/2000s rave and Eurodance. By remixing a well-known song, we have to think outside the box and find ways to make it feel fresh while still staying true to what makes our sound stand out. It’s a great opportunity to refine our style and experiment with new techniques, all while keeping things exciting and fun.

Finally, can you tell us what’s next for Lady Decibel?

Lady Decibel is ready to take it to the next level in 2025. Early on in the year, we’ll be teaming up with Babe Records for a compilation release, which we’re really excited about. Later in the year, we’re looking forward to our very first trip to Amsterdam Dance Event! We’re also experimenting with a new sound that complements our current Euro style, exploring Hard Dance & Hard House. One of our main goals this year is to get signed to Tidy Trax, a legendary Hard House label from the UK that started in the 90s. We’re also going after Hannah Laing’s newly launched label, Doof. Oh, what a dream that would be if we could have a release there! It’s going to be an exciting year of new music, collaborations, and big milestones!
