Liam Gallagher responds to Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock calling Oasis “boring”
Liam Gallagher has responded to comments made by Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock, in which he called Oasis “boring”.
The bassist – who has also worked alongside Blondie and Iggy Pop, and has been hitting the road with Frank Carter in recent months – spoke to NME earlier this month, as he is currently touring the UK to promote his 2023 solo album ‘Consequences Coming’.
As well as discussing his time in Sex Pistols, thoughts on Trump’s re-election as US President, and Danny Boyle’s “cheesy” Pistol TV biopic, he also opened up about his thoughts on the massive news of an Oasis reunion.
Discussing how he perceived the fans’ reaction to the news of a comeback tour, he told NME: “I’ve always seen Oasis as a bit Status Quo. [With Quo], to hear one song once was enough. It’s a bit like that with Oasis: to hear one song once is enough. I just find them kind of samey.”
He continued: “I know the guys. Nice blokes. I’ve gotta be careful what I say because I bump into Noel [Gallagher] quite a lot. He lives around the corner from me. I think Liam is fantastic. He sings great – he’s like Johnny Rotten but can carry a tune.
“He’s got a magnetic stage personality: he can just stand there and it’s riveting. The rest of the guys? No. I think they’re boring live. I’d never go to see ‘em.”
He also reflected on the time he nearly performed with them in the mid-’90s, and added that “the reason they didn’t want me in the first place is because they wanted someone who’d stand still […] I went to see ‘em and I thought: the last thing they need is someone else standing still.”
Now, Liam Gallagher has shared a response to the comments on X/Twitter, and hit out at the bassist for his remarks. Responding to a fan who asked him about the interview, Gallagher replied: “FUCK HIM SID WAS THE PISTOLS”.

The comments refer to late Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, who joined the line-up after Matlock’s initial departure from the band in 1977, and went on to become an iconic figure in the ‘70s punk scene.
Matlock also spoke about Vicious in the NME interview, and reflected on how the bassist is still hailed as a cultural icon. “What can I do about it? It annoys me. It’s just that whole thing of people who died young. Marilyn Monroe, who made some great movies. James Dean: made three great movies. Jimi Hendrix: fantastic, if you like that kind of thing. And Sid played bass on one track,” he said.
“It’s a bit galling, to be honest. I knew Sid – we were neighbours. We hung out a bit together and he was a likeable nitwit […] That might be the case that he’s a poster boy and blah blah blah, but it’s not doing him much fucking good now, is it?”
Explaining what it was like to see him become a face of the band after he left the line-up, Matlock added: “I didn’t care. I was really busy straight away doing my Rich Kids [his post-Pistols band] thing, and when that sort of happened but didn’t quite happen, I was on tour with Iggy Pop for a couple of years, making a record [1980’s ‘Soldier’], touring America and Europe.”
Matlock’s tour continues tonight (Tuesday November 26), and will also see shows at the Docks Academy in Grimsby tomorrow (27) and London’s Dingwalls (30).
Sex Pistols Featuring Frank Carter are due to perform at Download Festival next year, as well as appearing at Glasgow Summer Sessions on Saturday June 21 and Dreamland Margate on Saturday August 23. Visit here for tickets and more information.
As for Liam Gallagher, Oasis announced the South Korea and Japan dates for their eagerly anticipated 2025 reunion tour last week, and also since dismissed rumours of new music, saying there’s “no Oasis album in the making”.
