Listen: Bright Eyes Cover John Prine’s “Christmas in Prison” to Benefit Hello in There Foundation Grantees

In celebration of the season, Bright Eyes have delivered their cover of the John Prine original, “Christmas in Prison.” Featured within the song is a sample from “A John Prine Christmas,” released in 1993. All proceeds from single sales will benefit the Hello in There Foundation’s 2023 grantees, Porter’s Call, Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, Renewal House, and National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.

“It is strange to get a chance to share a track with a hero of mine who has passed on. Normally not something I would do. I don’t like holograms. But I have so much love and affection for John as a person and his music,” offered Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst. “He really changed my life on a lot of levels.”

Orbest continued, “When I heard the sample of him talking about Christmas just put such a big smile on my face and I couldn’t help but want to share it with other people. A little Christmas gift to a stranger. It’s all about John and his beautiful song. But I am happy to sing in the choir. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone around the world. I wish you love and light this season to you and yours.”

Fixed the intent of the release, the Hello in There Foundation “aims to identify and collaborate with individuals and communities to offer support for people who are marginalized, discriminated against or, for any reason, are otherwise forgotten.” Learn more
