Sky Ferreira has released her first song in over two years titled ‘Leash’, which was written and recorded for upcoming A24 film Babygirl. Listen to it below.

The pop singer unveiled the track onto streaming platforms today (December 6), following her 2022 comeback single ‘Don’t Forget’. Fans, including Charli XCX, have been waiting with baited breath for new music from the embattled singer, who previously spoke about her troubles with former label Capitol Records.

The synth-heavy dream pop ‘Leash’ brims with vengeance, with Ferreira singing about the pain and cynicism of walking away from love. “I sense it in the dark, I let you wear me like a scar / I’ll run through everything that you are,” she sings in a verse.

She then launches into its explosive, nihilistic chorus: “You’re my heart in human form / Always crawl and kiss the ground / Surrender to the master / In the end, nothing matters“. Listen to ‘Leash’ below – the song was written with her ‘Don’t Forget’ collaborator Jorge Elbrecht.

“I’ve always wanted to do something like this for a long time because I felt like so many of my peers have worked with A24 musically,” Ferreira told Rolling Stone of ‘Leash’.

“I started off with a way poppier idea, and then I watched the film for a second time, and then ‘Leash’ came to me,” she continued.

“I wasn’t sure they would go for it because it wasn’t so obviously pop. I feel like it embodied the actual undertone of the film more so than the written premise of the film.”

Earlier this week, Ferreira told Vogue that she’s “working” on getting her music back from former label Capitol Records.

“They want me to look responsible by dragging it out and blocking me from releasing music even after already being blocked from so many other opportunities because of them,” she said.

She then revealed that she is currently “working to try and get some of those songs back” from Capitol – not all, she added, even though she “paid for all of my studio sessions”.

Ferreira also told Rolling Stone that her long-awaited second album ‘Masochism’ will be out in 2025 – she’s still deciding if she will self-release the album or find another label, as she is currently working without a manager at the moment. “I didn’t want to immediately run into someone else’s arms,” Ferreira admitted.

“It’s like going from one boyfriend to another boyfriend immediately. It just didn’t seem very wise after everything that’s happened.”

Her return to music has been praised by fans, who previously campaigned for the singer to be released from her Capitol contract with a Times Square billboard and a banner that was flown above the label’s building in Los Angeles.

In a 2022 interview with NME, Ferreira previously spoke about the challenges presented by the major label while she fought to get ‘Masochism’ released. “It just goes in circles trying to gain respect, I guess,” Ferreira said.

“I’m almost out of it, but I do feel a bit like whack-a-mole or something. I’m almost out of this dark hole, and then it’s like ‘BONK!’”.

In other news, Ferreira also spoke about feeling “connected” with David Lynch while working on the set of Twin Peaks: The Return.

Babygirl, which stars Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson, will be released in the US on Christmas Day, and on January 10, 2025 in the UK.
