The new album will be released on March 21 via Fiction Records and has already been previewed by the singles ‘The Silence That Remains’ and ‘Trial By Fire’.
Now, the sprawling, nocturnal beats and textured, ambient production of ‘Night Life’ give further indication of the new direction the Southend band are heading in with this record.
Listen here:
The band have said: “Lotus Eater has had several past lives. It was one of the first songs from the ‘Night Life’ sessions that we felt really excited about – Rhys’ original lyric had a feeling that made me think of ‘5 Years’ by David Bowie, and I started to build on the idea.”
“A lotus eater lives in a state of blissful ignorance, and the song to me describes the moment of coming back to reality. We wanted it to have a feeling of both melancholy and euphoria, letting go of the past and starting again.”
“The spoken word section was improvised in the studio, and the mid-section of chopped-up electronics came from Amelia’s world of synth programming. It feels almost like a sister track to ‘Sea Within a Sea’ in some ways, and it’s one of our favourite songs on the new album.”
‘Night Life’ sees The Horrors embrace a new line-up, with vocalist Faris Badwan and bassist Rhys Webb remaining as founding members and new members Amelia Kidd on keys and Telegram’s Jordan Cook on drums joining.
The Horrors’ ‘Night Life’ tracklist is:
- ‘Ariel’
- ‘Silent Sister’
- ‘The Silence That Remains’
- ‘Trial By Fire’
- ‘The Feeling Is Gone’
- ‘Lotus Eater’
- ‘More Than Life’
- ‘When The Rhythm Breaks’
- ‘LA Runaway’
The band are also in the middle of a tour of the UK, with remaining dates in Leeds’ Belgrave Music Hall tonight (December 4), before Glasgow tomorrow (December 5), Blackpool (12), Bristol (13) and Southend (14). Find any remaining tickets here.
They will also play Dot To Dot Festival next year in Bristol and Nottingham, alongside the likes of Fat Dog, Sprints, Big Special, Honeyglaze, Kate Bollinger, Låpsley and Nimino.
