Lucius Deliver ‘Wildewoman’ Retrospective Set at Brooklyn Steel

On Saturday night, Lucius took the stage at Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Brooklyn Steel for the final show in its Wildewoman 10th Anniversary Tour. To heighten its celebration, the band welcomed an opening performance from Jeff Taylor and surprise appearance from Louis Cato, who joined for the band’s Good Grief album closer “Dusty Trails.” Following the show, Wolfe and Laessig flew to Los Angeles, where they accompanied Joni Mitchell for her performance of “Both Sides Now” at the 66th Grammy Awards.

After an opening set of originals from singer-songwriter Taylor, Lucius set the mood with pre-show performances of “Woman” and Jerry Rafferty cover “Right Down the Line,” both featured on the indie-pop quartet’s 2018 album Nudes. Lucius then commenced its special anniversary set, which commemorated the group’s breakthrough label debut with a run through the album’s tracklist, ornamented by a few scattered covers and favorites from its broader catalog. After running through the album’s first six cuts, Taylor joined the band for “Housewarming,” a shelved track from the Wildewoman sessions which finally saw release on Jan. 26.

Next, Lucius invited former Berklee College of Music peer Louis Cato to the stage for the roaring, folk-inflected ballad “Dusty Trails,” culminating in a memorable around-the-mic sing-along. From there, the band continued into the second half of Wildewoman, interspersed with new covers of Stevie Nicks’ “Wild Heart,” Paul Anka’s “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” and My Morning Jacket’s “Wonderful,” as well as its own hits “Stranger Danger” and “Ice Cream.” After the set, Lucius returned for an encore with its tender early single “Two of Us on the Run,” followed by a well-suited rendition of the Beatles’ “Goodbye” with support from Taylor to wrap the night in retrospective mood.

Lucius will return to the road in March for a 12-stop joint tour with Dawes, which will unite the influential indie vanguards on the stage to rehearse their catalogs as a single band. The bands will kick off this special run with an appearance at the Jefferson Theatre in Charlottesville, Va. on March 8; tickets are available now at ilovelucius.com/#tour.
