Macon City Auditorium to Host Dickey Betts Memorial Concert Featuring Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Duane Betts and More
On April 18, 2024, the world lost a true musical icon with the passing of the great Dickey Betts. At 80 years old, Betts remained an inspiration for numerous generations of artists across scenes and styles, not only for his visionary and virtuosic approach to guitar with the Allman Brothers Band, which defined the sound of rock’s golden age, but also for his spirit, which poured over with passion, danger and light. That light never dimmed, and next month, a collective of Betts’ collaborators and devotees will stoke the flame of his legacy with an all-star tribute concert.
On Feb. 28, The Macon City Auditorium, in the Allman Brothers Band’s old stomping grounds of Macon, Ga., will celebrate the life and music of Betts with a performance titled “In Memory Of Dickey Betts.” The event will honor the larger-than-life figure of the artist will a bill just as titanic, featuring an ensemble curated by his son, the Southern rock torchbearer Duane Betts. So far, 11 artists have signed on, primarily centering ABB alum and other familiar favorites from the band’s orbit; beyond Duane, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Oteil Burbridge, Jaimoe, Chuck Leavell, Devon Allman, Charlie Starr, Jimmy Hall and Lamar Williams Jr. are confirmed for the show, with additional guests still to be announced.
“My Father was a force to be reckoned with in many ways,” Duane penned in a post to his social channels after Dickey’s passing. “Anyone who has met him or watched him play can attest to that. At his core he was just an extremely sweet and sensitive soul. He left us an amazing body of work to enjoy, laugh, cry and dance to that will never die. I am so proud of what he accomplished in his lifetime. You did damn good, dad. Your light will continue to shine at the highest frequency forever.”
Tickets for “In Memory of Dickey Betts” will become available in a general on-sale on Monday, January 13 at 10 a.m. ET. In honor of Dickey’s passion for music, a portion of the proceeds from this concert will go to benefit music education programs.
