Marcus King Unveils Upcoming Rick Rubin-Produced Album ‘Mood Swings’

Marcus King has announced his upcoming project Mood Swings, to be released on April 5 via American/Republic Records. Through collaboration with legendary producer Rick Rubin, the rising country hero’s third solo album reaches beyond his classic background, incorporating wailing soulful vocals and digital distortion to compliment a strikingly honest exploration of his inner world. To accompany this announcement, King has released the album’s title track “Mood Swings,” a haunting album trailer and the dates for an eight-month  2024 world tour.

King recorded the album’s first song, “Mood Swings,” with engineer Jason Lader on the spur of his first meeting with Rubin. In this inaugural session, King’s let loose his blues guitar prowess over a stuttering, swinging tape-delayed drum machine, prompting an outpouring of truth from the furthest recesses of the young star’s soul. In only half an hour, the smoldering track was completed, and the energy was set for the album to come. On this left turn inward, King has shared that “Rick helped me view mental health as a writing partner in a way. I’ve learned it can give me that creative spark.”

This track follows the sleek, funk-inflected lead single “F*ck My Life Up Again,” released on Jan. 19. King’s earlier track offered the first window into the artist’s new sound, centering the artist’s electrifying vocal chops for the very first time. Rubin’s production casts King and his talents in a whole new spotlight, using rich, dramatic strings and choral backing to coax beauty and new depths of sincerity from the artist and heal old wounds. “I love the way listening to this album makes me feel,” Rubin has said, speaking to the gravity of the recordings, “I can’t think of another project quite like this one. Marcus’s playing and singing are from another planet.”

On March 7, King will begin his album release tour with a performance at Love Rocks NYC, kicking off a run of 59 North American performances and 17 in Europe that will keep the prolific tourer on the road until November 12.
