Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have signed on to write the score for the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black. The Bad Seeds bandmates’ score will be revealed in full with the film’s release on April 12 in the U.K. and May 10 in the U.S.

A first glimpse of the collaboration arrived through an Instagram post from Back to Black’s director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who caught the duo in the midst of composing: Cave is shown seated at a piano, with Ellis to his side on the violin. Marisa Abela, known for her role on Industry, will star as Winehouse and will sing on recreations of the late singer’s standards for the soundtrack. Giles Martin–son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin–will serve as music producer for the film. Martin was awarded an Emmy in 2022 for his work on the documentary series The Beatles: Get Back.

Cave and Ellis began their collaboration three decades ago when Ellis contributed violin to Cave and The Bad Seeds’ 1994 album Let Love In, after which Ellis joined the band full-time. Since then, the composing duo have scored numerous films, such as The Road, Wind River and Blonde, as well as the 2022 Netflix show Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Most recently, Cave and Ellis released the track “Earthlings,” originally recorded for the acclaimed 2019 album Ghosteen.

This spring, Cave will stage a 13-stop tour across Australia. For tickets and more information, visit nickcave.com.
