Orebolo Conclude Run at The Capitol Theatre with Extensive Debuts and Covers
On Feb. 8, Goose acoustic offshoot Orebolo started its three-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. Night one set the tone of what was to come from the trio, comprised of Rich Mitarotonda (vocals, guitar) Peter Anspach (vocals, guitar), Jeff Arevalo (upright bass), who introduced new material into their setlist and nodded to the storied venue and its Grateful Dead history during ensuing performances. Orebolo continued the motif the following nights with more first-time plays, covers and traditionals.
After starting their second night on stage with “Mr. Action,” Orebolo landed on the tradition the Grateful Dead popularized, “Jack-A-Roe.” Friday’s initial debut was “Dr. Darkness,” a song derived from the Goose canon. Representing the first play for 2024 was “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me,” known to some as “I’ve Been All Around This World.” An ensuing take on “Creatures” was left unfinished before the trio dipped into Elvis’ “Don’t Be Cruel,” representing another debut.
With a steady quiver of folk influence, Orebolo turned out Bonnie Raitt’s “Louise” before ending the frame with a pair of Goose tunes. Upon their return to the stage, the trio added more material, which originated from their other project, even speeding up “Echo of a Rose” before debuting Sharon Van Etten’s “Love More.” Next, they added another Dead cover, “Tenessee Jed,” before Goose-associated songs closed out the night.
Orebolo’s final night on the storied stage commenced with first-time traditional “Liza Jane.” The band picked up a tune from the Goose archive, “Atlas Dogs,” which debuted under the Orebolo banner last night. Set one also turned out a slow and melodic rendition of “All I Need,” with a “Secret Agent Man” tease. Before busting into a set break, Orebolo covered songs from Father John Misty and Tom Waits, adding “Rockdale,” which served as the final song for the night’s first half.
Back on stage, the night conjured special moments like debuts of Radiohead’s “True Love Waits” and Dick Burnett’s “Man of Constant Sorrow.” The trio mingled a rotation of covers and Goose tunes, tapping into Presley and Dead tunes, before providing one last nod to the venue and its unique history with “U.S. Blues.”
With the band’s Capitol Theatre run in the books, Orebolo will take time away from the stage. A festival appearance at Solshine: A Music & Arts Reverie is their only impending appearance as an acoustic trio.
